A multi-‘phaceted’ Pharoah

That American Pharoah – so talented.

The Triple Crown winner is busy training for his next race – the $1 million Haskell Invitational Aug. 2 at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, which will be preceded by a three-day Pharoah Phan Phest. But already, he’s on to his second and third careers.

First, there’s the modeling thing. AP is featured in August Vogue, out Thursday, July 23, in a spread that includes a glamour shot by Steven Klein. The Pharoah is wet and draped in roses – which is the way Klein likes to portray his male subjects.

"We want to cap his racing career with something that's never been done in the history of sports," Pharoah owner Ahmed Zayat told Vogue, which has a history of spotlighting models and horses and model horses, as the online slide show attests.

But AP has not only become a model. He’s an artist as well. The Pharoah has painted a Moneigh for Rerun Thoroughbred Adoption that has already broken the online auction record with a bid of $5,300. (The bidding closes this weekend.)

More than 200 racehorses have painted Moneighs, which involve putting some nontoxic paints on the horse’s nose and then letting him rub it against a canvas. Then his nose is wiped, a hoofprint seals the deal and a masterpiece is born.

The Pharoah’s masterwork is in the manner of the Abstract Expressionists, with strong, angular shapes in blue, yellow and green.

Afterward, AP received a kiss from co-creator, artist Dawn Mellan, which he accepted with his usual aplomb. It’s another facet of AP – honey-bunny.
