You know how they always say you have to get back on the horse, back in the saddle?

Well, that’s just what American Pharoah has done, so to speak. After a three-week victory parade, he’s back working out at his home track, Santa Anita, and looking good doing it.

No word on where he’ll be racing next so there’s no point in speculating. What’s clear is that he has a few races left, including the Breeders’ Cup Classic Oct. 30 and 31, before he begins making other little horseys. That’s too bad. Bloodlines are tricky, as I’ll explore in “Criterion,” the third planned book in my series “The Games Men Play,” told in part from the viewpoint of a racehorse trying to win the Triple Crown.

Not every champion produces a champion. But most champions can continue to be champions. It would be fun to see A.P. run as a 4-year-old just as Seattle Slew and my beloved Affirmed did. It would also be fun to see the Pharoah race now against 4-year-olds like California Chrome.

But then I’m the type who would rather work – well, write actually – than do anything else.

Remember: Virtually every living creature can reproduce. Few can be truly great at what they do.

Anyway, click the Blood-horse link to see an interesting comment from someone who was there to see AP return to the track but missed him while fiddling with the cell phone. The problem with the virtual world is that it produces virtual experiences. Perhaps that’s why reality shows and memoirs are so popular. People are always seeking authenticity.
